The Department was established in 1976 as an attached department of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of Pakistan, to fulfill and implement the three Acts of 1976 designed/formulated to promote and regulate the professions related thereto and to bring about development in the tourism industry in the country Under the 18th Amendment in the Constitution Department of Tourist Services (DTS), was devolved. Currently, the DTS is working as an attached department of the Tourism Department Government of Punjab.

DTS is mandated to implement the following three laws and the rules made thereunder: 1. Punjab Hotels & Restaurants Act, 1976 and rules, 1977. 2. Punjab Travel Agencies Act, 1976 and rules, 1977. 3. Punjab Tourist Guide Act, 1976 and rules, 1996.
